(Bridgeview, IL 9/16/2008) The Zakat Foundation (ZF), an international charity organization based in Chicago, Illinois, is sponsoring daily iftar-dinners for approximately 200 people per day at five Chicago-land mosques and in Minneapolis out of St. Stephen’s Human Services center during the entire month of Ramadan.  This is the third Ramadan during which Zakat Foundation, with support from Bridgeview’s Mosque Foundation, has sponsored daily iftars-dinners at local mosques.

“It is a good opportunity for Muslims to share the blessings of Ramadan while having a feeling of solidarity with the hungry,” says Executive Director, Halil Demir.  In Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad is to have said that the one who goes to bed while his neighbor is hungry is not a true Muslim.  “Under this teaching,” says Demir, “we strive to feed our hungry neighbors during the Holy Month of Ramadan.”

Apart from this local effort, Zakat Foundation also provides hot meals and food packages to people across the world.  As part of its Ramadan Programs, the organization feeds an estimated 10,000 people a day, worldwide. Last year, Zakat Foundation was able to benefit 125,000 people around the world with warm food for Iftar-dinners and distribution of good packages.  Donors were able to provide for families from Bangladesh and Chechnya to Indonesia and the United States.  Zakat Foundation’s goal this Ramadan is to reach 250,000 hungry and needy people around the world.
The Zakat Foundation is a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  All donations to Zakat Foundation are tax exempt and our Tax ID is 36-44 76244.
The Zakat Foundation, in operation since November 2001, runs both domestic and international projects, and fosters charitable giving to offer relief, education, and development to those in need.  For more information, visit www.thezakat.org.
